Spain – Winter sun in Lanzarote

Lanzarote is one of the Canary Islands, a volcanic destination with quaint white buildings dotted around the place, all painted with either green or blue shutters.

The Canary Islands are an ideal destination if you are looking for some winter sun during the cold miserable months of the UK as the climate is temperate all year round.

We stayed in Playa Blanca at the Elba Premium Suites Resort. This is an adult only resort offering a selection of restaurants, swimming pools and a spa. We had a few days in the resort enjoying the sunshine; one of the swimming pools had a bar where it served food and drink, so I had a glass of sangria to toast the start of the holiday.

A complimentary spa voucher was included with our stay, a fantastic way to relax. The Spa was great fun; there was an amazing high-pressured shower system. The Jacuzzi was fantastic, with heated loungers to relax on afterwards. The Hotel had spectacular views of the golden sands of Playa Flamingo beach. This is a lively resort filled with many cafes, bars and supermarkets.

We hired a car for a few days and explored the Timanfaya National Park, the mountains of fire, where you can take a camel ride to see the spectacular views of the volcanoes!

The following day we went to the colourful Marina Rubicon Markets, still in Playa Blanca, which are open every Wednesday and Saturday. Having the car for three days enabled us to see the island, including the wine museum Museo El Grifo.

One evening we had a lovely meal at La Lapa restaurant in El Golfo, eating fresh locally caught red snapper which was cooked to perfection, with a glass of the local Lanzarote wine, went down a treat!
