Greece – Mamma Mia, here we go to Crete again!

Greece is having a moment again – thanks to a very popular film franchise involving many Abba songs! The real star of the film of course is the location. What is not to love about sunshine, crystal clear seas, fabulous food and very friendly people?

Following in the footsteps of Cher, I headed to the Aegean at the beginning of September for a week of rest and recuperation. Well, a little further south in fact to Crete, the largest of the Greek Islands and birthplace of Zeus. Crete is deservedly very popular. There are many historical sites (most famously Knossos), beaches, coves, mountains, gorges and plenty of sunshine.

We stayed at Out of the Blue Capsis Elite Resort, in Agia Pelagia. This is half an hour from Heraklion, in the middle of the island, so a great location. The hotel is set on a peninsula, with the village literally on the doorstep. We stayed in an Exclusive Collection Junior Suite with a hot tub on the balcony, overlooking the sea – bliss! There are several restaurants, two beaches and many facilities, including three Escape Rooms!

We managed to tear ourselves away and visit Elounda and Spinalonga (the island which was famously a former leper colony, as written about by Victoria Hislop in The Island). Crete is a destination you could return to many times, so if the film has made you long for a trip to Greece then this is a great place to start.
