More than half of pet owners around the world (55% in a recent survey) say that their four legged friend is just as important to them as their children! Leaving them behind while they go on holiday is either a source of great stress or something that they simply won’t countenance.

More than 40% say that they would choose their holiday destination based on whether or not they can take their pets with them, and almost a half are willing to pay more for their accommodation if it is classed as pet-friendly.

2020 looks like the year that this trend of putting pets first will really be recognised by destinations, as they look for innovative ways to raise their game when it comes to pet-tailored offerings and amenities. Look out for facilities like dog day beds, pet spas, dedicated room service menus and even specially designed pet restaurants.

The UK is famously a nation of pet lovers, but we lag a little behind in the table of most pet-centred when planning our holidays. 39% do give serious consideration to our pets, whilst India leads the way with 66% saying their pet is their priority!

This research was carried out by booking.com in a survey of 22,000 adults during August 2019.
